(INTRO)

On Friday, the PBS weekly newsmagazine NOW will air an hour-long investigation into the fight to keep American elections free and fair across the country less than three weeks before the mid-term vote. It's called Clean Campaigning.

Arizona State Representative Doug Quelland is a conservative Republican who supports clean elections by his own example.

(QUELLAND)

I'M NOT GONNA GO OUT AND-- AND TAKE MY MONEY OR TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S-- YOU KNOW, SOME LOBBYIST OR SOME YOU KNOW, WEALTHY PERSON IN MY DISTRICT, AND-- AND BUY AN ELECTION... I JUST WANT TO DO IT AND NOT BEHOLDEN TO ANYBODY.

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano reveals her strong convictions about clean elections.

(NAPOLITANO)

THESE ARE WHAT POLITICS IN A WAY, I THINK, STARTED OUT AS.

(CLOSE)

Do clean campaigns represent a return to purer democracy, empowering average Americans to run and win and giving special interest influence brokers something big to worry about? Or are campaign restrictions undemocratic? "Votes for Sale?" airs this Friday night (check local listings).
