(INTRO)
According to new research to be released next week in New Orleans at the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians visits by men to emergency departments increase significantly following televised sporting events.
Dr. David Jerrard, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, says his three-year study shows that many men wait until after a game before coming to the hospital.
(JERRARD)
WE LOOKED AT NEARLY 800 PRO FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL GAMES OVER THREE YEARS AND THE NUMBERS OF MEN WHO CHECKED INTO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT INCREASED FOLLOWING GAMES IN EVERY SPORT. WE PURPOSELY AVOIDED INCLUDING PLAYOFFS, BOWL GAMES OR MARCH MADNESS. THESE WERE REGULAR SEASON GAMES THAT THEORETICALLY WOULDN'T MEAN AS MUCH TO SPORTS FANS.
(CLOSE)
Dr. Jerrard recommends that patients with any symptoms of a medical emergency should seek immediate medical attention. For more information on this and more than 400 other studies being presented, visit www.acep.org.
