(INTRO)
A national poll finds that the American public ranks public education, along with the Iraq War, as their top concern. The survey was commissioned by Public Education Network and released in conjunction with Give Kids Good Schools Week, taking place October 16 through 22. The week is part of a campaign that provides the public with the information, knowledge, and power they need to take action to improve public schools.
Wendy Puriefoy, president of the Public Education Network, explains the results.
(PURIEFOY)
WITH SIXTY TWO PERCENT OF VOTERS SAYING CANDIDATES ARE NOT FOCUSING ENOUGH ON PUBLIC EDUCATION, IT'S CLEAR THAT CANDIDATES ARE FAILING TO ADDRESS A TOP CONCERN OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. THEY BELIEVE THAT EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO A QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION AND THAT ELECTED OFFICIALS SHOULD BE DOING MORE. THIS WEEK GIVES EVERY AMERICAN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK OUT AND PLAY A ROLE IN IMPROVING OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
