October 2006

Stations, the following is a news announcement. Suggested lead in 3, 2, 1...

(INTRO)

In an appearance on Friday, October 6 at the City Club in Portland, former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt and former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber will address the Columbia and Snake River salmon crisis and the federal failure to solve it, while challenging the region to come together to craft workable and long-term solutions.

Secretary Babbitt will specifically address the debate about removing the four lower Snake River dams in eastern Washington.

(BABBITT)

FEDERAL TAXPAYERS AND NORTHWEST RATEPAYERS HAVE SPENT EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS ON SALMON RECOVERY EFFORTS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN LITTLE OR NO BENEFIT. RIGHT NOW, SALMON RECOVERY IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER BASIN IS AT A CRITICAL JUNCTURE WHERE WE MUST MAKE ONE OF TWO CHOICES: ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE LACK THE POLITICAL WILL TO RESTORE THE SALMON AND LET THEM GO EXTINCT OR OPEN UP A FORUM FOR STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF REMOVING THE FOUR SNAKE RIVER DAMS.
